I moved in with my father to help him out after coming home from the hospital. For a while there everything was going along as planned but about 3months ago I noticed that there were less and less bath towels in the laundry. I asked if he had anything in his room and he said no. Now with the hot summer months here I have noticed a body odor smell everytime he enters the room. His skin looks flaky like a lot of dead skin hanging around. I dont know how long it has been since he showered last. I dont know how to bring the subject up to him. Me being his daughter would be kind of strange to give him a bath if he needs help. I have asked my brothers but they also say they cant do it. Please give me some suggestions on how I say Dad you need to take a bath you smell without hurting his feelings.

Your father may be having a problem bathing himself. Tell him you need some extra help and hire a healthcare worker to come in to the home to bathe him. Discuss it with your father by saying you want someone to help with some of the duties such as laundry, bathing etc. If your father is reasonable with no dementia, he may very well have no problem with a third party helping him.

Hi needanswers6,

I am sorry to hear about the issues that you are having with you father and bathing. Unfortunately, you are not alone here and many other caregivers experience a similar issues. Your father may not be showering for many different reasons.

Here is an article written on this topic that should help you.

Thanks Sharynmarie for the advice. I would love to have someone come in and handle the issues I can't but my Dad is so adamant about anyone coming into the house for any reason. He gets really stressed out and angry every month that the oxygen tanks are delivered and the system checked. Although I am willing to give your suggestion a try and sit down with him and see if we can get this hashed out. Hopefully he will agree. I just don't want to cause him any undo stress in his condition. Thanks.
